School and Library Visits
Maureen Sullivan, writer, and Alison Josephs, illustrator, love to come to schools and libraries to read and autograph Christmas Feet, Ankle Soup and Custard and Mustard.
A typical presentation begins with an introduction by a school principal, librarian or teacher. Depending on the age group, the author and illustrator team discusses the creative process, explaining how a picture book is produced with an emphasis on the collaborative aspects of writing and illustrating.
The optimal space for the presentation is a room or auditorium that can be darkened. The school provides a laptop equipped with Microsoft PowerPoint and a projector.
After an introduction about the artwork by the illustrator, the author reads the verse as the paintings are projected on the screen. A lively question and answer period follows the reading of the book.
All children are writers and illustrators. They are curious about the process of making a book from its inception to the opening of the front cover. The authors have even received questions about the editing process and how much control they retain over the finished work.
Readings are tailored to age levels. K-1st and a 2nd-4th audiences are addressed separately. For older grades, careers in writing and illustration are discussed.
The authors are happy to customize the presentation to complement ongoing curriculum themes. Ankle Soup, for instance, is a perfect Thanksgiving Day book as well as a year-round point-of-view and diversity vehicle.
